Description: Collect-a-Can operates regional and national school competitions in South Africa. Schools can raise funds for themselves by collecting used cans as well as stand a chance to win monthly and annual prizes, while environmental awareness is being created.
These cash prizes to the value of R788 800 are sponsored by environmentally concerned companies such as Nampak, ArcelorMittal, Coca-Cola Canners, The South African Breweries and Amalgamated Beverage Industries. There is a total of R388 800 in monthly prizes to be won per annum. Apart from the prizes, schools are paid cash for the cans collected. An approximate 250 000 children in schools throughout Gauteng, KwaZulu Natal, Western Cape and North West provinces, are reached through this campaign annually to sensitise youth on the importance of recycling.
This has played an important role in practical environmental education.
Collect-a-Can has joined forces with the MySchool initiative to get the recycling message out to more schools. My School supports Collect-a-Can as a communications partner and promotes the recycling message and educates learners on good waste management habits such as recycling.
