MESULA is a company started up two years ago by the INGO Oikos East Africa. The idea was born starting from the close relationship of Oikos with the communities of Arumeru District in Northern Tanzania. This region is globally acknowledged as one of the places mostly affected by over-spraying of Highly Hazardous Pesticides (following the classes of WHO). MESULA has converted to organic management more than 20 acres of land, working only with small scale farmers. The company is also providing market solutions for the farmers, following a short chain approach. 50% of the price as an average is going back to the farmers, instead of being distributed along the chain among several middlemen.
The company provides technical assistance and uses beneficial IPM products and organic inputs accepted by the East African Standards (EAOPS). We are pioneers in Arusha as we are the first ones promoting organic products at a middle scale level in a context where still no proper value is given to them by the community in town. Every month we raise awareness of the challenges of small scale entrepreneurs and farmers, promoting their products in the Arusha Farmers Market, an event where producers and farmers can show their business models and their products to the public, attracting around 300 visitors. The farms are going to be certified soon by TOAM (www.kilimohai.org)
