Description: The IUCN NL programme Small grants for the Purchase of Nature (SPN) provides funds for local NGOs to purchase threatened nature, create safe reserves and connect wildlife habitats for endangered species.

Every year, SPN receives dozens of funding requests from NGOs in Mexico, Brazil, Nicaragua, Indonesia and other countries. A wide network of experts from all over the world is involved in screening these requests, ensuring only the best proposals from the most capable local NGOs make it through this selection.

SPN focusses on areas with a high biodiversity value that are crucial for the survival of endangered species like parrots, poison dart frogs or woolly monkeys. These areas are under high pressure from land conversion, development projects, or logging. With the financial support from SPN, local NGOs can protect these threatened ecosystems and safeguard them for future generations.

Since its foundation in 2001, SPN has enabled the purchase of over 27.000 hectares. SPN is supported by the National Postcode Lottery.
