Global Festival of Ideas launches SDG Action Campaign

The inaugural Global Festival of Ideas for Sustainable Development has convened thought leaders, policy-makers, business leaders and civil society activists in Germany this month to chart new thinking and action on the world’s biggest development challenges. The Global Festival of Ideas officially launched the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) action campaign at the event – showcasing the latest innovations, tools and approaches to SDGs implementation, while building synergies, increasing mutual understanding, developing solutions and mobilising partnerships and resources to drive action for sustainable development.

The Festival is hosted by the UN SDG Action Campaign in partnership with the Overseas Development Institute (ODI) and an exciting alliance of international organisations, with the support of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.

“As the United Nations Development Programme, with more than 50 years of experience in more than 170 countries, we are committed to supporting countries in their effort to make this vision a reality — ending poverty, putting communities on a sustainable development pathway, managing risk and enhancing resilience, and ensuring peaceful and inclusive societies,” said Sarah Poole, Deputy Director of UNDP’s Bureau for Policy and Programme Support at the launch of the SDGs Action Campaign in the Global Campaign Centre in Bonn— the first day of the festival today.

“We in the United Nations development system are working together to respond to the requests received from more than 100 governments to support the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in their countries.  To do this, we are supporting governments to mainstream the agenda, generating awareness amongst all relevant actors, stakeholders and partners on the ground, and helping governments to land the agenda at national and local levels—bringing the SDGs directly into their national development plans, strategies and budgets,” she further added.

The Federal Government of Germany and UNDP signed a Statement of Intent to undertake global activities for the SDGs and open a Global SDG Action Campaign Center in Bonn, earlier in May 2016. UNDP is the principal UN entity backing the campaign and aims to provide coordinated and pooled policy support to countries working to meet their SDGs targets. It includes mainstreaming products with proven success to engage multi-stakeholders at the national level such as My World 2030 and the World We Want.

This unique festival brings together more than 1,000 experts and activists from over 80 countries and marks the beginning of a revolutionary gathering of global movers and shakers towards the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
