Eat for the Earth on World Environment Day

In celebration of World Environment Day on 5 June, Yuppiechef is challenging South Africans to ‘Eat for the Earth‘ by hosting a meal to raise funds and awareness for Soil for Life, a Cape Town-based non-profit organisation that assists communities in the Western Cape to overcome hunger, poverty and unemployment through the establishment of community and home food gardens. Eat for the Earth is in line with the World Environment Day theme for 2013, Think Eat Save, which aims to raise awareness of food waste and losses.

Eat for the Earth_World Environment Day 2013It is estimated that about one third of global food production is lost or wasted each year (averaging 1.3 billion tonnes) and that consumers in industrialised countries waste as much food as sub-Saharan African countries produce each year. Food waste is mainly a problem in industrialised countries. Food losses on the other hand, are more common in developing countries – often resulting from financial, managerial and technical limitations in harvesting techniques, inadequate storage and cooling facilities and infrastructure, and un-developed packaging and marketing systems.

South Africa has one of the highest rates of income inequality in the world and many families do not have access to enough fresh fruit and vegetables to stay healthy. Soil for Life is tackling the issue of food insecurity one household at a time, by teaching people to start their own food gardens.

“We live in a world of plenty, where food production outstrips demand, yet 870 million people are undernourished and childhood stunting is a silent pandemic. To create the future we want, we must correct this inequity. We must ensure access to adequate nutrition for all, double the productivity of smallholder farmers who grow the bulk of food in the developing world, and make food systems sustainable in the face of environmental and economic shocks,” said United Nations Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon.

To acknowledge people eating for the earth this year, Yuppiechef has set up a real plant wall at their headquarters – and for every meal registered, they will be adding a plant. A live feed of this wall is being streamed to There will also be live daily broadcasts from the plant wall and interesting things going on including storytime, showerhour and special visits.
