Dr Richard Munang has been recognised for his environmental and sustainability leadership – receiving the prestigious African Environmental Hero Award, conferred by the International Environmental Roundtable for Africa.
The IERA Awards aimed at celebrating outstanding individuals, organisations and corporate bodies whose actions, policies or projects have helped enhance the environment or motivated others to become conscious of their environment.
Dr Munang is the UNEP Climate Change Coordinator for Africa and UNEP’s Ecosystem Based Adaptation (EbA) for Food Security Focal Person (coordinating the implementation of projects in 40 African countries). Through his work he has demonstrated how climate action can improve food security, create jobs and boost economic growth.
Dr. Munang is committed to helping build climate resilience and food security through Ecosystem-Based Adaptation in agriculture across Africa and has been instrumental in creating a paradigm shift in the way climate change is addressed in the African agricultural context.
“Richard Munang’s leadership on climate action as a way of addressing Africa’s socio-economic development priorities is a fresh way of looking at climate change on the continent,” said Dr. Gregory Clem, Convener of the Environmental Roundtable. “Africa cannot afford to act on climate change in separation from its development needs and objectives. By joining the two areas with his pioneering work, Dr. Munang has become a true Africa Environmental Hero. “
